Site Choice

After studying all the conditions of the different sites, we had decided to use the quarry. The site has flat land with natural surroundings for tourist attractions. There is a nursery to provide food. It is easily accessible as the jetty is only a few minutes walk away. The abiotic conditions of the water is fresh, rich in minerals and is clean as the sediments settle at the bottom of the lake. Also, the water has a low oxygen level. Therefore, based on all the above factors, we have decided on the quarry. The most important factor that we considered is the quality of water as we want to provide a readily available water source, a simpler water purification process and an affordable water source.

Reasons why we did not choose the other sites:

Water in the coastal area was a little cloudy, and is polluted by boats that pass through the area. In addition, the concentration of salt in the water is high.
The mangrove swamp has a lot of fine sediments in the water and the salt level might be high as it is close to the sea, water purification may thus be expensive.

Hence, after much thought, we have decided on the quarry.

As Singapore is located near the equator and has a generally tropical climate, rainfall is abundant. In the dry season, however, we will have a shortage of pure water. Our solution is that we will channel water from the sea and desalinate the seawater before we pump it into the quarry. Monthly water tests will be conducted to ensure the clarity of the water.

Except for a few small particles, the water is generally clean, and thus we have come up with a simple water purification device that can help filter the sediments in the lake. Since our design is simple to make and also portable, we will conduct classes for DIY water purification devices. Not only will these classes help others to understand more about how to purify and filter their own water using the device, it can also serve as a souvenir.

1)Take a mineral water bottle and cut it through the center, leaving the top part of the bottle.

2)Take a cloth and place it at the mouth of the bottle. Secure it by tying a rubber band tightly across the cloth.

3)Place a cloth into the bottle first to prevent the filters from dropping out.

4)Fill sand into the bottle first. Compress it.

5)Place pebbles in next. Compress it.

6)Place stones next into the bottle. Compress it.

7)Finally, add another cloth on top for easy cleaning.

Now you got your water purifying device!
